LOCAL PRESENCE OF THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF SAN ANTONIO
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) was founded April 23, 1833; in Paris, France by a 20 year old college student named Frederic Ozanam. By 1845, the SVDP had already spread throughout Europe and advanced to the United States in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1871, the SVDP was introduced in San Antonio when the first SVDP Conference was established at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
For the past fifty-three years, there have been three levels of the SVDP functioning within the Archdiocese of San Antonio. The three levels are the Conference, District Council, and the Archdiocesan Council. Each of these levels and their interaction with one another is briefly described in the following three paragraphs.
The first level, the Conference consists of a team of volunteers who provide emergency assistance to the needy in their local community. The Conference is the heart of the SVDP. A Conference President leads each Conference. At present, in the Archdiocese of San Antonio there are seventy Conferences plus one additional Conferences affiliated from the newly formed Diocese of Laredo. In all, there are approximately 1,528 active and associate members in these seventy-five Conferences. During the fiscal year 2005, these caring people gave over 181,124 volunteer hours of time. During this period, the Conferences collectively spent a total of $5,560,513 on client assistance, goods, services and volunteer time.
The second level, the SVDP District Council, coordinates the efforts of the Conferences within a particular geographical area. The District Council seeks to find solutions to common problems within its jurisdiction. Each District Council has a President. The District Council Board is comprised of the Conferences Presidents of that District Council and others approved by the Conference Presidents. Presently, there is ten District Councils within the Archdiocese.
At third level, the SVDP Archdiocesan Council (SVDP-AC) coordinates the activities of all ten District Councils. The SVDP-AC is responsible for training and development of the volunteers at the lower levels of the SVDP. The SVDP-AC also administers special programs that often help the Conferences to expand their services to the needy. The SVDP-AC is the only level of the SVDP that has paid staff.
The local presence of the SVDP in the Archdiocese of San Antonio is most visible through the works of the SVDP-AC programs and the charitable works of its Conferences. The statistics that are presented are for these two levels of the SVDP of the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

DESCRIPTION OF CLIENT SERVICES - 2005
FROM THE ARCHDIOCESAN COUNCIL
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Archdiocesan Council (SVDP-AC) programs listed below are funded by one or more of the following sources: federal, foundation grants, corporate gifts, the Archbishop's Appeal, private donations, SVDP Conference contributions, SVDP Council of the United States Disaster Funds, or by the financial reserves of the SVDP-AC.
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL DINING ROOM
The St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room is located at 928 W. Commerce. Anyone, homeless or hungry, who wishes may come to the SVDP Dining Room to eat the evening meal, Mon. - Sat. at 4:45 p.m.; and to Sunday breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Three meals are prepared daily for priority guests of the nearby SAMM Shelter and for persons over 60 who are homeless or who have inadequate kitchen facilities. Paid staff includes a full time kitchen manager as well as full and part time cooks. On a rotational basis, approximately 960 volunteers serve the prepared meals to our guests who are coming to eat. In the year 2005, at a cost of $323,806 the SVDP-AC was able to provide 277,493 meals to the homeless and hungry in the SVDP Dining Room. Since its founding in 1985, more than 4,107,732 meals have been served.
OPERATION FOOD PANTRY
The SVDP-AC has SVDP Conferences with food pantries in seventy-three Catholic parishes in the Archdiocese of San Antonio and two in the Diocese of Laredo. Persons who are in need of food assistance should call the SVDP-AC Office, at 225-7837, and a referral to the appropriate SVDP Conference food pantry will be made. Clients must live within the Catholic parish where they are applying for food assistance. Through this program, in the year 2005, the SVDP-AC and its SVDP Conferences provided more than 50,120 persons with approximately 601,440 meals at a cost in excess of $179,793.
CLIENT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The SVDP-AC has a small client financial assistance program. This program assists clients who find themselves in financial difficulty. Limited financial assistance is provided for things such as rent / mortgage, utility, funeral, and medication. The funds for this program are usually donated and designated for the purpose of client financial assistance. Cases are usually referred for this program by local SVDP Conferences. In 2005, the SVDP-AC assisted in 55 cases at a program cost of $4,459.
DESCRIPTION OF CLIENT SERVICES - 2005 continued
CLIENT REFERRAL PROGRAM
Through this program the SVDP-AC provides assistance to clients who call the Council Office at 225-7837. The person needing assistance is provided information about services available through the SVDP-AC and SVDP Conferences and information about other agencies that may be of assistance. This referral service is available during regular business hours - 9am - 5pm, Mon. - Fri. The SVDP- AC receives approximately 45,000 calls per year. In 2005, the program cost was $82,356.
HOMELESS PERSONAL CARE ITEMS DISTRIBUTION PROGRAM
The SVDP-AC also distributes clothing, shoes and personal care products to the homeless who come to eat at the SVDP Dining Room. Individuals, churches, schools, companies or SVDP Conferences donate some of the items distributed. The SVDP-AC purchases other items. During the year 2005, over 1,400 persons received clothing, shoes and personal care items.
THANKSGIVING & CHRISTMAS "CLEARING HOUSE" PROGRAM
The SVDP-AC also served as a "clearing house" for families and individuals needing help at Thanksgiving and/or Christmas. We matched those needing help with the individuals or business who called in and wanted to donate to someone in need. Over 575 people were assisted through this endeavor.
PROJECT COOL
The SVDP-AC and the SVDP Conferences became partners with Catholic Charities, City of San Antonio Community Initiatives, San Antonio Fire Department, United Way, City Public Service, KMOL-TV, and others for PROJECT COOL. This program helped provide over 5,000 fans for disadvantaged elderly living in Bexar County. The SVDP-AC picked up donated fans and then distributed from the SVDP Warehouse to the SVDP Conferences and other agencies who then distributed them directly to the elderly.
DISASTER SERVICES
Hurricane Katrina ravaged Louisiana and other Gulf Coast states in late August 2005. Thousands of evacuees came to San Antonio and the SVDP-AC was there to help. One of the first items requested at the shelters were towels and wash clothes. The entire SVDP-AC purchased and collected approximately 1,500 of each. Donations were collected to help in the recovery part of the disaster and will be held for use in 2006.
